Four year old Nell was found sitting on a harbour in Australia 1913. Abandoned and alone. She grows up with nice foster parents. On the occasion of her 18th birthday her foster father tells her that she was found and that nobody knows where she came from. So Nell spends the rest of her adult life searching for her true family. But she never manages to solve all the secrets surrunding her origins.
When she dies she leaves her granddaughter Cassandra a cottage in England. So she goes there to uncover the mystery finally.

The book jumps from 1913 to 1975 to 2005 and back. Slowly we learn about Nells family and all the fogs and shadows disappear.

Nell was born on the estate of Blackhurst Manor in Cornwall in 1909, but whose daughter is she? Three women are involved, one man and many secrets.
